Our History
The NC Mentoring Partnership grew out of the 1998 State Summit on Volunteerism and America's Promise. Under the leadership of Governor Hunt and with the help of a $1 million donation from Pepsi Bottlers, our goal of recruiting 40,000 mentors was launched as a part of the North Carolina Promise effort. Working with NC Broadcasters Association and others, the focus on mentoring began to take shape.
In 2000, the NC Promise-Governor's Mentoring Initiative became the official state partner for the National Mentoring Partnership, the lead organization in the America's Promise campaign to find caring adults for every child. Since 2002, the effort has been known as the North Carolina Mentoring Partnership. Under the guidance of a statewide advisory council, the partnership will continue its effort to help recruit thousands more volunteers to serve as mentors and tutors for NC children and youth. Working together, we seek to involve more North Carolina citizens in volunteering to mentor either at schools or community based sites. |
